At the moment, consciousness is not at all well-defined. We all know what it is, because we experience it, but how to relate it to the physical world?
Are animals conscious? Plants? Clouds? Is it just we humans and we are somehow divine? Do other sufficiently advanced beings, perhaps on a distant planet, also hold the same perception of consciousness?
I see consciousness as being more like gravity or geometry than something generated by the brain. In other words it is a function of the way the cosmos functions, rather than anything that we can do by ourselves.
We have to understand consciousness in a way that makes more sense than the current rather nebulous explanation that it is an "emergent property" of brain function, and that's going to take a new way of looking at it, in the same way that we found a new way of looking at the relationship between Sun and Earth to open up our view of the wider cosmos.
