I cannot say that I focus on an object when meditating. The mantra, to begin with, or the breath if I want to avoid bodily distractions, but otherwise I am simply present and paying no attention.

If I were to focus on something, it would be a sign that I have wandered off track. I remember myself and return to the mantra.

During conscious activity, such as writing or enjoying sex or cooking, then focus is important. If I am thinking about preparing dinner while flat on my back, then I am doing something wrong!
