I'm learning German - have been for a year or so, so much for the Learn German in Three Months boast of the textbook - and I've reached the stage where I can hear a sentence and understand it, but I have to wait for the brain to process it.

One can almost feel the language elves scurrying around inside fetching pieces of the puzzle and slotting them into place.

And if that takes too long, then the speaker has gone onto the next sentence, and I haven't fully gotten my head around the previous one, and I lose track.

With the best will in the world, if I can only process the words at a certain pace, then I'm going to miss out on full comprehension, no matter how brilliant or poetic or vital the presentation.
