The Sanskrit terms manas and atman refer to different things, so it's really a matter of how you look at the soul and what you call the various bits.
I see religions as being like stories. The stories may not be true, but the messages they carry are valuable. The Good Samaritan for example. Jesus probably made it up on the spot, and the details may not have been checkable, but who cares? It's the moral of the story that is golden.
