Why wouldn’t I infer that the equipment is conscious? Consciousness is not limited to the full-colour, stereophonic, 3D experience we enjoy, surely?

Consciousness is as much a part of the universe as are rocks, measuring devices, and people.

I don’t think anyone has enough of a handle on consciousness to define it. We experience it, sure, but we don’t have the foggiest notion how it actually works besides the “This bit lights up when I think of hamburgers” fashion. We can see that in operation, plainly. Some people, their face lights up and glows orange at the thought. But is that consciousness any more than turning on a light bulb?
