Yes, there’s some anecdotal evidence that this may not be the case. However, this is the same deal as the claim that the moon landings were faked. The Soviet Union was able to track and monitor the Apollo missions. If they hadn’t verified the voice and TV transmissions in real time, they would have been very insistent that the thing was a hoax.

If Don Trump were sitting on evidence that the Chinese were lying their socks off, then why would he keep quiet about it?

My guess is that fake news — in the real sense of the term — is in play. Internet trolls put out rumours that gain traction and are only much later demonstrated to be untrue.
